With only about 55 million vaccines available for the 2004-05 influenza season, the United States is facing a critical shortage. Not surprisingly, spammers and scammers have been capitalizing on the situation. Bogus offers for the flu vaccine are circulating rampantly over the Internet, and unlicensed vaccines are being sold by unregulated online pharmacies and offshore suppliers – and the ramifications are serious.

“The vaccine shortage has caused some people to become desperate, creating new opportunities for scammers to defraud email users,” said Marc Chouinard, head of Vircom’s SpamBuster Team. “We’ve seen a $ 60 vial of flu vaccine sell online for as much as $ 800.” But Chouinard cautions that just because you can buy vaccines and nasal mist vaccines online doesn’t mean you should. “There are no guarantees as to what you’re getting. It’s just not worth the health risks.”

The U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) agrees. Their website offers warnings about the dangers of purchasing drugs and vaccines online, stating that consumers who do are at “increased risk of suffering life-threatening adverse events…from inappropriately prescribed medications, dangerous drug interactions, contaminated drugs, and impure or unknown ingredients found in unapproved drugs.”

Despite the wealth of information and legitimate products available over the Internet, Vircom urges people to be extremely wary of products being marketed to them – especially if they’re health-related. The FDA supports this viewpoint, stating “The Internet makes it easy for unscrupulous people to sell drugs to patients without…safeguards in place. A website may appear to be associated with a legitimate pharmacy when in fact it is not.”
